Infusion

Once your CAR T cells have been made and are ready to be delivered, you will be given a date and time to return to the treatment centre.

On arrival at the treatment centre you will be admitted as an in-patient, so it’s important to have made any necessary arrangements in advance and have everything you need for the duration of your stay.

During the infusion

Your individualised CAR T cells will arrive frozen in an infusion bag and will be defrosted at the hospital. Before your infusion your doctor or nurse will check carefully that these cells are yours.

A CAR T cell therapy infusion is a single infusion treatment that takes around 30 minutes. A nurse will place a needle into a vein in one of your arms and connect to the bag of CAR T cells.

You may notice a sweetcorn smell while you are being given the infusion. This comes from one of the components used to help preserve the CAR T cells.

After your infusion, your healthcare team will monitor you carefully for possible side effects.
